A thousand horsemen block the road

Near its destination the caravan was intercepted by a thousand horsemen under Hurr al-Riyahi. The Imam showed them the sackful of letters that had summoned him; Hurr replied that he and his men had not written them.

Under orders, Hurr could neither let the caravan reach Kufa nor allow it to turn back. He shadowed it instead, steering it toward an open, waterless plain.
