Sayyida Zaynab (a)

Sister of Husayn · the voice of Karbala

She turned captivity into a pulpit.

Sayyida Zaynab (a) was the daughter of Imam ‘Ali (a) and Fatima al-Zahra (a), and the sister of Imam al-Husayn (a). She was raised in the household of revelation and known for her knowledge, eloquence, and patience.

At Karbala she lost brothers, sons, and nephews. When the survivors were taken captive, she became their protector and their voice — confronting ‘Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad in Kufa and Yazid in Damascus with speeches that exposed the crime and shamed the powerful.

It is largely through her that the truth of Karbala survived. Her courage is why the day is remembered as a victory rather than a defeat.
